History of the motif: The sad but beautiful story Who will comfort the knight? depicts a poetic story about the lonely Smidge, who goes on an adventure to overcome his fears and finds friendship in the Scrooge. When the story begins, Smidge is very lonely, quiet and shy. He is afraid of the dark and cannot find anyone to share his feelings with: "Once upon a time there was a little boy who lived all alone in a lonely house. He was probably far more lonely than he thought at night when he lit all the candles" The boy likes to take walks along the sea, and one day he finds a message in a bottle on the beach. The letter is from a lonely and scared girl called Scrooge who is also looking for a friend. Knyttet saves the letter, the first he has ever received, and sets out on a journey to find the Toad. The story that began so sadly is about to have a happy ending: "Now we comfort each other, and are never afraid again!"
