Ninny's story is an important reminder of the importance of care
In Tove Jansson's short story 'The Story of the Invisible Child', the Moomin family takes in the small, badly treated Ninny girl, who has become invisible. She dare not speak, play or even laugh. The only thing that reveals her whereabouts is a small silver bell that hangs around her neck.
The Moomin family welcomes Ninny with open arms and treats her with open-mindedness and kindness. The warmth of the Moomin family's welcome helps Ninny regain her self-confidence and become visible again. The very next morning, little feet appear on the stairs and then a pair of little legs. But the days go by and no face appears.
Moomintroll, who is curious and caring, does everything he can to help Ninny. He encourages her and tries to teach her all the games he can. Ninny's beaked face only becomes visible when she dares to express her feelings properly - get angry and laugh so hard that the bridge shakes. The Invisible Child is a story about the importance of seeing others and being seen.
The story was published in 1962 as part of the short story collection The Invisible Child and Other Stories.
