History of the motif: In Jansson's stories, Muskrat appears as a solemn old man who likes to spend his time in peace and quiet, reading books and pondering life's big questions. He is not easily disturbed and his views make him appear to be something of an existentialist. His approach to life is well expressed in his lines in The Magician's Hat: "How unnecessary it is to run around and talk, to build a house and cook and collect possessions!"
But there is still something that touches even the philosopher. When he falls to the ground from his favorite spot, a hammock in the garden of the Moominhouse, his dignity takes an embarrassing hit. Already tired of the restlessness of the Moominhouse, he retreats to the solitude of a beach cave where nothing disturbs his thoughts.
It is these events that are depicted on Muskrat's porcelain. His philosophy is tellingly revealed in the title of the book on his lap: "On the futility of everything".
