Love in three scenes
The story of the Love illustration began in 1996 when Moomin Arabia's long-time former illustrator partner Tove Slotte drew Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden in three scenes for a new 0.3-liter mug.
Slotte combined illustrations from Tove Jansson's various Moomin series to show their loving relationship as both playmates and sweethearts. Although the two sometimes fall in love with others, their adventures always end happily. Their undulating relationship can only mean one thing: true love!
The mug's illustration is perhaps best known for the hug between Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden on the front of the mug. In the story Moomin and the Martians (1957), Moomintroll, curious by nature, gets into trouble when he plays with the Martians' broken machine that turns him and Moominmamma into little creatures. After a fast-paced adventure, one of the Martians' parents helps restore them to normal size.
Snorkmaiden hugs Moomintroll, now back to normal size, with relief. The glowing sun in the background is taken from the series We Live in a Jungle (1956).
The scene of Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden painting flowers is taken from the story Building a House (1956) and depicts a scene that follows a disagreement. The two finally reach a compromise on the color of the house, so that the red and blue become purple. The third scene of the lovers' adorable meeting on a path is taken from the story Snorkmaiden in Rococo (1958).
About Moomin Arabia
The first Moomin tableware was produced by Arabia in the 1950s and the current Moomin ceramics were introduced in 1990, when designer Tove Slotte started turning Moomin stories into ceramic objects, inspired by Tove Jansson's original illustrations. Three to five different new mugs are brought to the market annually, including limited edition items for the summer and Christmas seasons. Moomin mugs are extremely popular collector's items, Tove Slotte put the importance of the Moomins nicely when she said: "I think everyone should enjoy a little dose of Moomin philosophy every day".
